Garden Habitat for Beginners

Guidance for DIY gardeners working to restore habitat by adding a patch of native plants where you live, i.e. yard, balcony or community space.

Tend to soil, prioritize native plants, add water and the pollinators and birds will come! Learn to read microclimates, select native plants and grow a habitat garden. Gardening for habitat not only supports nature but soothes the heart.

If half of American lawns were replaced with native plants, we would create the equivalent of a 20 million acre national park – nine times bigger than Yellowstone, or 100 times bigger than Shenandoah National Park. – Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home

Topics include:

  • Reading your local microclimate (sun, shade, water)
  • Getting to know native plants
  • Making a plant plan
