Story Tracks

A correspondence course for ages 7 and up.

Snail

The art and science of reading nature, of observing and interpreting the movements of animals or clouds, tells a bigger story of our place in nature. We are biological. Like the bear who knows how to slow down in winter, humans also have biological clocks that sync with nature’s cues.

At the core of reading nature is visiting a place outside regularly, a place to be quiet and observe what’s happening around you with all of your senses. Over time, you will get to know the birds, plants, animals and seasons where you live. Catch the stories of your quiet place in a journal, and send snippets by snail mail once a season to receive a letter in return. Each season, receive a personal response with questions to help grow your awareness and deepen a connection with your place.

Your Story Tracks Correspondence Course includes:

  • A welcome letter with tips to find your quiet nature place and journaling prompts.
  • A personal letter from Rae at the turn of each season (4 total) to catch and celebrate the stories you observe at your quiet place, with questions and resources to expand your awareness and connection.
  • Unlock short videos as you progress about ways to identify tracks, plants, and care for your local habitat.

Benefits include:

  • Quiet time spent in nature is well-documented to increase a sense of calm, confidence outdoors, and connection with the natural world. Knowing someone that is interested in what you experience and learn in nature helps to expand your awareness and curiosity to learn more.
  • Learning to read and share nature observations through kinesthetic ways of learning including visual, auditory and tactile (writing or drawing) deepens memory, literacy skills and is more fun!
  • In an era dominated by technology, rediscover the joy of receiving a personal letter via snail mail!
